What is an Internet Exchange Point (IXP)

An Internet exchange point (IXP) connects Internet service providers (ISP), content providers, webhosters and like, together to exchange traffic through their networks.

An IXP consist of an Ethernet switch that connects networks together. Each network are connected with its router and sends traffic through the Ethernet switch (IXP) to a router belonging to the other connected network. This exchange of traffic between two networks is called peering. Customers on an IXP can choose who they will peer with.

The benefits of peering on an IXP:

  • Affordable and efficient peering. Since all peers are connected to the IXP Ethernet switch.
  • Increased speed and quality. You will have more routes to send your traffic.
  • Control of traffic and reduce costs. Traffic goes through peers instead of your transit provider.
